IPL 2023 : Three players DC could’ve picked instead of Rilee Rossouw

For INR 4.60 crore, Delhi Capitals acquired Rilee Rossouw at the IPL 2023 auction.

The 15th season of the Indian Premier League saw Delhi Capitals underperforming. They stumbled throughout pivotal moments of the campaign and finished the league stage in fifth place with seven victories in 14 games. Despite a poor season, the team management trusted most of its players to perform well the following year and let only five cricketers go.

The Delhi Capitals expanded their talent pool at the IPL 2023 auction by adding players like Rilee Rossouw, Mukesh Kumar, Phil Salt, Ishant Sharma, and Manish Pandey. Even though the majority of the deals were successful, Rossouw’s acquisition raised some questions.

The Delhi Capitals did not have many talented players with a variety of skills, therefore it might not be a good idea to sign someone who only has one set of skills. The Delhi franchise had the option of signing any of the high-caliber all-rounders who were put up for auction.

Here are three players DC could’ve picked instead of Rilee Rossouw : IPL 2023

3. Dasun Shanaka

Dasun Shanaka has a track record of success in the T20 league. In the shortest format, the 31-year-old has played in 176 games and amassed 3649 runs at a commendable strike rate of 142.65. Additionally, the Negombo-born player has 53 wickets at an 8.72 economy.

Shanaka has demonstrated his versatility for Sri Lanka as well. The expert all-rounder has excelled in the finisher’s role, scoring 1328 runs at a strike rate of 121.83 in 85 T20

Internationals. He has a reputation for being a cunning player with the ball and has taken 23 victims in those outings.

Shanaka’s ability to contribute in both areas gives the team more balance. Due to the paucity of all-rounders who could bowl the seam in their lineup, Delhi Capitals may have bought him at the IPL 2023 auction. However, in the big game, the club management went with Rossouw as a batter rather than that strategy.

2. Jason Holder

When the game was played in its simplest version, Jason Holder was a bankable name. The 31-year-old has given his team crucial breakthroughs and challenged batsmen with the bounce he extracts from the pitch. Additionally, he has been a useful batsman who has played significant innings when batting later in the order.

Holder has scored 1788 runs at a strike rate of 126.18 while taking 199 wickets in 204 T20 games at an economy rate of 7.89. The Barbados-born cricketer has also shown his prowess on a global scale, taking 51 wickets in 49 T20 Internationals with an economy rate of 8.17 and hitting 385 runs at a strike rate of 120.68.

With the exception of Mitchell Marsh, Delhi Capitals lacked high-caliber seam-bowling all-rounders. Additionally, DC might have signed a player of Holder’s calibre to offer depth to the side, but it was not meant to be with Marsh’s ongoing issues with injury. At the IPL 2023 auction, only the Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings shown interest in purchasing the West Indies all-rounder. He was eventually acquired by RR for INR 5.75 crore.

1. Ben Stokes

One of the best all-rounders England has ever produced in cricket is Ben Stokes. The 31-year-old has left the globe in awe with his passionate bowling performances and decimated bowling attacks with his daring stroke play. In 43 T20Is, he scored 585 runs at a strike rate of 128.00 while claiming 26 wickets with an 8.39 economy rate.

Additionally, Stokes has established his dominance in numerous T20 tournaments all over the world. The Christchurch native has amassed 3008 runs with a strike rate of 133.39 throughout 157 games played in the shortest format. He has taken 93 wickets at an economy rate of 8.41 while batting.

Stokes has demonstrated the ability to bat both in the middle and at the top of the order, adding variety to the batting order. He is also capable of bowling during any stage of the game. The southpaw is also quite speedy in the field.

Stokes is an all-around player who can benefit any team, therefore it was expected that Delhi Capitals will bid on him at the IPL 2023 auction. DC did not, however, raise their paddle in support of signing the colourful cricketer. Ultimately, Chennai Super Kings purchased the England all-rounder for INR 16.25 crore.
