IPL 2023: South African stars are expected to miss certain IPL 2023 matches, which is terrible news for the league’s franchises. The majority of South African players, including Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, David Miller, and Aiden Markram, won’t report to their respective IPL teams in India until April 3, four days after the tournament’s start on March 31. The teams that will be most impacted by this situation are Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans, Lucknow Super Giants, and Punjab Kings.
ESPNcricinfo reports that Cricket South Africa (CSA) informed the BCCI that it wanted all of its marquee players to be ready for the two-match home ODI series against the Netherlands that will begin in late March.

Six of the 10 IPL franchises may be impacted by the CSA’s decision. Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, Marco Jansen, Nortje, Lungi Ngidi, Tristan Stubbs, possibly Dewald Brevis, Miller, the defending champion Gujarat Titans, Lucknow Super Giants’ Quinton de Kock, and the Punjab Kings’ Quinton de Kock are among the South African players on the rosters of Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, and Punjab Kings (Rabada).
The CSA has taken this move because South Africa needs to win the ODI series against Netherlands in order to automatically qualify for the 2023 World Cup, which will take place later this year in India. Last week, the Netherlands presented their strong team for the series in Zimbabwe and the ODIs in South Africa.
In that ODI Super League series against the Netherlands, the South African team is scheduled to play on March 31 and April 2 in Benoni and Johannesburg, respectively.
CSA has updated BCCI.
The BCCI informed the teams in December that contracted South African players will be available beginning on March 29, two days before the IPL’s first game, in a message about the availability of overseas players.
Nonetheless, BCCI has been advised of the justification for the necessity that South African-contracted players participate in the Netherlands series, according to CSA CEO Pholetsi Moseki.
The lowest five ODI Super League clubs must compete in World Cup Qualifiers against five Associate teams, while the top eight teams automatically qualify for the 2023 World Cup.
Together with the West Indies, Sri Lanka, and Ireland, South Africa, who is now ranked ninth, is vying for a direct World Cup entry. The Netherlands series thus became crucial for the Proteas.
