FIFA World Cup 2022 : Messi has final chance to complete Argentina’s holy trinity with Kempes and Maradona
The phrase “Lionel Messi: The king without the crown” perfectly describes the star’s international career. It’s appropriate that Mario Kempes, Argentina’s first No. 10, who helped lead the country to its first World Cup victory, was the person who so characterised Messi.
Diego Maradona was always the king in Kempes’ eyes, despite the fact that they later had their differences. Perhaps Kempes was the monarch who never wore the throne. I was more famous for my hair than the goals, he would often quip. His debonair good looks, coupled with his long, lazy hair, made him a target for envy and desire. He was a hero, but he was never a cult figure; rather, he was more of an aloof hero, and he never achieved the same level of recognition as Messi or Maradona.
The night after the final, the team attended the ceremony, enjoyed a few glasses of wine, and then, at around 2:30 a.m., we returned to our training camp to pack our belongings, Kempes recalled to ESPN Argentina. About 300 kilometres away from Buenos Aires in Rosario, I packed my things and returned home.
He went back to Valencia a week after that. He delivered Argentina its first World Cup victory, but he didn’t remain long enough to see how his nation, which was then ruled by a military junta, responded to his success.
As Kempes and the majority of Argentines would concur, Messi may find a spot next to Diego, perhaps with Kempes on the other side. However, Diego will always be Diego, the greatest, the unbeatable, and the unmatchable.
All three were outstanding athletes, with Maradona being arguably the greatest player of all time and Messi being one of the all-time greats. Kempes was the best player of his era. They played their game in various environments. Kempes lived through a period of privation and covert turmoil in Argentina under the military junta. Because Argentina’s military was routed after invading the Falkland Islands by Britain, the 1982 failed defence of the monarchy rarely occupied media columns.
Argentina had just recently emerged from its turbulent history when Maradona won the World Cup. And the nation is struggling with inflation and unemployment when Messi steps out to imitate them. As opposed to Kempes, who avoided politics, Messi is disengaged from his nation’s politics. Maradona, a lifelong Peronist, was initially unaware of politics until becoming neck-deep in them. However, if Messi were to win, the political setting would be integrated into the story.
But Messi carries the hardest weight of the three. That is not to argue that Kempes or Maradona were not burdened. It was heavily criticised that Kempes, the only member of the 1978 team who played for Valencia outside of the United States, was included in the team. He was unpredictable in his early games. César Luis Menotti, a chain-smoking coach, then proposed that Kempes remove his beard.
“After that game, as we were returning to our camp and planning for our upcoming assignment in Rosario, the coach suggested to me, “Mario, why don’t you get rid of the moustache and see if your luck changes?” Kempes transformed his appearance after shaving, and he went on to score six.
Maradona’s burden was frequently himself; it was the weight of being Maradona, the crushing weight of his own strength, aura, talent, and No. 10 shirt. The tale of how Maradona came to possess the number is lovely.
When Diego approached me and asked, “Maria, can I have your shirt?” Kempes himself recalled: “I was putting on the shirt. Yes, but this might not fit you, I replied. But he said that was okay, so I handed him the whole set!
