One of the five cricketers shortlisted for the role of head coach of the Nepal cricket team is former Sri Lankan fast bowler Dhammika Prasad.

The former fast bowler, who is 40 years old, reportedly applied for and recently underwent an online interview for the position of head coach with the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN).

Prasad, incidentally, served as the Nepal team’s fast bowling consultant for two series against the USA and Scotland.

Russell Domingo (South Africa), Monty Desai (India), Glenn Pocknall (New Zealand), and Dav Whatmore are the other four individuals who were shortlisted and interviewed (Australia).

The seasoned Whatmore is the most well-liked of these five.

The position of head coach for Nepal has been narrowed down to five candidates, and Dhammika Prasad, a former cricketer for Sri Lanka, is one of them. A recent online interview for the role of head coach was conducted with the 40-year-old former fast bowler, according to sources from the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN).

Prasad, in particular, assisted the Nepal team’s fast bowlers throughout two of the team’s series, one against Scotland and the other against the United States. The other four selected and interviewed candidates are Russell Domingo (South Africa), Monty Desai (India), Glenn Pocknall (New Zealand), and Dav Whatmore (Australia).

Whatmore is reportedly the favourite of these five. But Whatmore is bound by a contract with the Indian Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) that lasts until March 2023. Whatmore was unable to join the Nepal team in time, which led to the early termination of Manoj Prabhakar’s contract, forcing Whatmore to resign from his position as coach.

In February 2021, Dhammika, at 37 years old, declared his retirement from international cricket. Dhammika had a severe shoulder injury during the Sri Lankan team’s 25th Test match, which forced him to miss a significant amount of time. After recovering, he played First Class cricket again, but he was unable to rejoin the national team.

Prior to that injury, he was one of Sri Lanka’s best fast bowlers, and his 5 for 50 at Headingley in 2014 is particularly well-known for helping Sri Lanka win their first series in England. Even though it was his only five-wicket haul in Test cricket, he excelled for Sri Lanka at home in 2015 and gave his best effort against the Indian team.

Prior to his retirement, Prasad had been attempting to rejoin the Sri Lankan national team, but considerable adjustments had been made to his bowling style as a result of his shoulder injury and subsequent surgery.
