Marcus Rashford of Manchester United has provided an explanation of his celebration following his goal in yesterday’s FIFA World Cup match between England and Wales (November 29).
At the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium in Qatar, the Three Lions defeated the Dragons with ease, 3-0. Phil Foden and Marcus Rashford both scored twice as England won Group B to advance to the knockout stages.
In the 50th minute of the game, the Manchester United player scored England’s first goal with a spectacular free kick. Rashford raised his hands in the air while bowing in jubilation. Regarding his celebration, he stated (according the NY Post):
“Unfortunately, I lost one of my friends a couple of days ago. He’s had quite a long battle with cancer, so I’m pleased that I managed to score for him. He’s always been a big supporter of mine; he was just a great person that I’m pleased to have come into my life really.”
Foden capitalised on a Harry Kane cross to score the game’s second goal. Then, with his weaker left foot, Rashford added a second goal, which Danny Ward of Wales might have had a chance to save.
At the FIFA World Cup 2022, the Manchester United attacker has now scored three goals in as many games for England. Together with Kylian Mbappe, Enner Valencia, and Cody Gakpo, he has the most goals in the competition.

The Three Lions will play Senegal on Sunday after advancing to the Round of 16 of the competition.
Rashford discussed the quality of the squad and how he helped the team advance to the Round of 16 in his remarks.
“I think for me winning trophies has always been the happiest moment on the pitch for me. I feel like the ambition in the squad is really good. We have a good mix of qualities. We have a really good squad and a squad that is definitely capable of challenging to win the tournament.”
He added:
“I’m hoping that we can build on this type of performance, keep improving and keep scoring goals and showing our qualities.”
Croatia eliminated England from the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia after they advanced to the semifinals. They later advanced to the Euro 2020 championship game but fell to Italy on penalties. After winning the World Cup in 1966, the Three Lions will aim to win it again this year.
